The Sea of Galilee is a fresh-water lake situated in north-east Israel. Its main source is the river which flows through it from north to south; that is the Jordan River, famous for being the source of holy water in which occurred Jesus’ Baptism, as described in the Gospels of his disciples (Matthew, Mark and Luke).
There are many names associated with the Sea of Galilee, as it is mentioned multiple times throughout the Bible: In the Old Testament the lake is known as the “Sea of Chinnereth” (Numbers 34:11; Joshua 13:27); in the New Testament, several sources refer to it as the “Sea of Galilee” (inc. Matthew 4:18, Mark 1:16, and John 6:1), while some call it “the Sea of Tiberias” (John 6:1, John 21:1), and “the Lake of Gennesaret” (Luke 5:1).
Significant to the Bible, and to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, it was in this beautiful region that much of the gospel story was enacted and the Ministry of Jesus Christ occurred. Miracles were performed
- Along these shores, in Capernaum, Jesus lived and recruited four of his apostles to be “Fisher of Men” (Mark 1:16), as described in all the Synoptic Gospels;
- Raging tempestuously in a storm, these were the waters subsided at Christ’s command (Matthew 8:26);
- In a small town called Magdala, a one Mary Magdalene was born;
- Tabgha was where Jesus fed 5,000 people with bread and fish ( and where The Church of Multiplication of the Loaves and Fish currently lives), revealed himself to his disciples after rising from the dead, and was recognized by St. Peter as the Messiah;
- On a hill overlooking the lake (the Mountain of Beatitudes), The Lord climbed and performed the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-12);
- Upon this holy water Jesus walked (Matthew 14:25).
Jesus made this area, this Sea of Galilee, one of the most sacred, inspirational sites for Christianity and Christian pilgrims; visiting these shores, this holy water source, represents a peak moment during tourists’ stay in the Holy Land.
